HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING
The meaning of “green’ and ‘green building’ has been blurred through overuse. Building professionals prefer ‘High Performance’ to reflect their new, resource efficient building techniques and standards.

TITLE 24
California Energy Commission established Title 24 in 1978 to set minimum energy efficiency standards for buildings in California. Title 24 has helped California moderate its energy use: for example, per capita electrical use in California is about half of the US average.

HIGH PERFORMANCE: A GREEN HOME
High Performance Homes exceed standards such as Title 24 (CA) or Energy Star. They accomplish this through advanced building techniques, superior systems integration and healthier material choices. Converting an existing home usually begins with a HOME PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT that identifies the home’s specific opportunities for upgrades.

CASE STUDY: High Performance Conversion of Cottages in Venice Beach, CA
Instead of tearing down three 1926 cottages 5 blocks from Venice Beach, Cynthia Foster and Karel Sampson stripped them to their bones and did a complete sustainable, energy efficient – and gorgeous – conversion. Eco cottages include solar PV, recycled windows, tankless water heating and a unique roof design to adjust indoor temperatures naturally.
